#Youngfarmers grow the #future
The Agri Western Cape Young Farmers Committee held its annual congress on Wednesday 22 May in Durbanville and the two interactive panel discussions, exploring future opportunities for #youngfarmers, offered valuable insight and advice for outstanding future growth. The discussions covered topics such as the fourth industrial revolution and technology in agriculture, opportunities within the land reform debate, local vs international markets and risks such as climate change, urbanisation and lack of government support. The panellists were Messrs Cornelis van der Waal: Head of Research at Wesgro, Phillip Oosthuizen: Head of Research and Economy at the Sernick Group, Johann Kotze (facilitator), CEO of the SA Pork Meat Producers, JP van den Berg, National Young Farmer of the Year 2018, Daneel Rossouw, Area Manager, Nedbank Agriculture, Theo Boshoff, Head of Legal Intelligence at Agbiz, Pieter Graaff, Farmer of the Year 2018, Arie van Ravenswaay, Assistant Director: Innovation, Technology and Design at the Western Cape Department of Agriculture and Johan Bornman, agriculture economist. The guest speaker was former Die Burger editor, Mr Bun Booyens, who commended the agri sector for being tough and flexible. He said agriculture has always been a powerful metaphor in history and that the sector will, as in the past, overcome its challenges with resourcefulness.
